Who would have thought that the sound of Nokia ringtones comes from a gentle orchestra – performed by one of the best guitar players of all time.
The “beating” Nokia phones have long been associated with many memories of 8X, 9X. Although “old-fashioned”, today, there are still quite a few people who love the Nokia series.
During the golden age of this Finnish brand, the “legendary” ringtone sounded 1.8 billion times a day. Its extremely catchy sound makes us have to reach into our pockets or bags immediately.
But where does this familiar tune from Nokia come from?
In fact, the original Nokia ringtone was composed in… 1902. Its father is musician Francisco Tárregan from Spain. He is said to be one of the best classical guitarists of all time, leaving behind countless romantic songs.
But today he is best known for… 3 seconds in a guitar solo called “Gran Vals”, which means “Great Waltz” or “Great Waltz”.
Why? Because those 3 seconds are also the original music that will later resound in every Nokia in the world.
The story of Gran Vals itself goes even further back, when the musician Francisco himself borrowed from the song “Grand Valse Brillate” composed in 1834.
Francisco Tárrega (1852 – 1909) was a Spanish musician. He is considered to be the founder of solo guitar performance.
In 1902, Francisco remixed the piece to the tender melody of the guitar. Unfortunately, he passed away 7 years later.
Nearly a hundred years later, in 1993, the original Nokia series was about to debut. Nokia’s engineers and marketing experts needed a piece of music with lasting vitality, catchy ears and “Gran Vals” was a good candidate.
It is known that the decisive factor that made the music selected was due to copyright. Under European law, if a musician dies 70 years after their work is released, the right to use it goes to the public.
By then, famed guitarist Francisco Tárregan had been dead for 84 years, meaning that Nokia could use his work without paying royalties.
Anyway, thanks to Nokia for picking out a catchy tune that we’ve been listening to all these years.
It would be sad if one day Nokia completely sank into oblivion with the tune of “Gran Vals”.
And now, listen to that divine guitar song. No need for hearing, you can still recognize the familiar right there!
