The culprit that makes the human body smell

Proteins, fats secreted by the body and the growth of bacteria are the main causes of human body odor.

George Preti, an organic chemist at the Monell Center for Chemical Induction in Philadelphia, USA, said that human body odor is partly influenced by genetic factors , according to Popular Science.

Accordingly, genes determine the type and amount of molecules that your body secretes. Different areas of the body produce specific secretions, and contain specific bacteria that contribute to odor formation.

The human body has two types of sweat glands, eccrine and apocrine . Eccrine glands are ubiquitous, often secreting sweat containing mainly water. Their purpose is to cool the body when you are exposed to high temperatures or exercise. In contrast, apocrine glands are located only in a few small areas of the body, such as the armpits. They usually release protein and fat. These molecules are the main culprits that create unpleasant odors.

The apocrine glands produce more sweat if you’re worried. This is what causes the sweat you produce during stress to smell worse than usual. In addition, all the small bacteria that live on the skin also interact with the body in different ways and they are all capable of causing odors.

Preti says some spicy foods like curries, onions and garlic contain fat-soluble compounds. They are usually released through sweat and make you smell worse. To overcome this problem, we can use deodorants and antiperspirants to limit the body odor emitted.
