Thailand launched… durian into space

A Thai space research agency has just released an image of a package containing durian packages about to leave Earth in July 2018.

According to scientists from the Space Technology Development Agency, Geography and Informatics (GISTDA – Thailand), this package is part of a project to produce food for future space tourism.

Previous studies have shown that under conditions much different from Earth’s, some organisms can undergo complex changes, including humans. So, in order to send something into space as food, one has to make sure it hasn’t been altered in a harmful way.

This tour of durian only lasts 5 minutes. Durian is pre-cut, put the segments into a plastic bag.

It will accompany a number of other Thai products, but details have not been announced. The shipment was launched by an American rocket in July.

After the trip, the durian and its companions will be analyzed in detail by scientists, to find out what changes it has when undergoing space travel, and what are the disadvantages of those changes. for people to eat or not.

According to a GISTDA spokesman, durian was chosen because Thais consider it the king of fruits. If durian returns safely from the voyage, the scientists will continue to launch packages carrying mangoes, Thai sticky rice and other national specialties.

This is not the first time specialty dishes have had the opportunity to travel to space for scientific purposes. In 2008, a Korean astronaut was also sent into space with a box of kimchi, the country’s traditional dish.
