Egypt’s incredible “floating” pyramids have been revealed in a new documentary that “deciphers” secrets “locked up for 4,000 years” of the past.
Senusret II was the fourth pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty of Egypt, who ordered the construction of the Pyramid of Lahun before his death. This pharaoh was very interested in the Faiyum oasis area and began to build an extensive irrigation system from Bahr Yussef to Lake Moeris in Central Egypt. The aim of his project was to increase the arable land in that area and due to his efforts it would remain the political capital of Egypt until the 13th Dynasty.
The pyramid is said to have once looked like it was floating.
But the Science Channel documentary “Unearthed” explains why his pyramid is “like no other”.

In the new documentary, released earlier this month, experts get a unique look at the past.
The series explains: “Built circa 1870 BC, it is an imposing monument covered with glittering limestone that rises 160 feet above the desert. At the top, a colored granite black makes a connection with the heavens, a smaller pyramid – for the queen of the pharaoh – and eight stone obelisks, all enclosed by a huge wall of mud-brick The complex is said to be surrounded by water, seemingly floating in the desert. It is located in the vast western desert of Egypt. This is a fertile area of the desert known as the Faiyum Oasis .” .
This is the only pyramid ever built that looks like it’s floating on water.
Leading archaeologist Salima Ikram has revealed her theory on how the pharaoh created the illusion that his pyramid was floating.
She said: “It’s an amazing sight for everyone, to see something like that – a pyramid-shaped mountain surrounded by water. We’re in the middle of the desert, but in the distance you have You can see a lot of trees and vegetation.The fact that there is a lush oasis here means there is a constant supply of water.Instead of using stone, mud and mortar, Senusret II’s pyramid used mud bricks before clad the structure with a limestone veneer. The outer cladding stones were joined together using pigeon-tail inserts, some of which have survived to this day.”
