Earth Science: Chemistry – Organic and Biochemistry
Molecules are particles composed of two or more atoms bonded together. They can include only a single element or a combination of elements. Every living thing is made of molecules, most of which contain the element carbon. With its endless variety of combinational possibilities, carbon forms the basic building block of organic chemistry.
In order to survive, all living things must take up and give off various substances. Normally our food contains all of the essential nutrients necessary for life. When our biochemical processes become unbalanced, however, medicines and supplements can help repair damage or replace what is missing.
Thus, organic chemistry also focuses on the development of useful drugs and other substances that do not occur in nature. Many of the products of chemistry and biotechnology have become part of everyday life in the modern world. As economic factors they carry great weight—yet they also pose the risk of unforeseeable consequences for human beings and the environment.
