The 800-million-year-old “two-in-one” diamond found in Siberia is a priceless and unique find in the world.
Alrosa, the leading diamond mining company in Russia, announced the discovery of a double diamond in the Nyurba mine in the Sakha Republic or Yakutia. They named the gem Matryoshka because it resembles a traditional Russian doll. The larger diamond weighs 0.62 carats and measures 4.8 x 4.9 x 2.8 mm. The smaller pellet inside weighs an estimated 0.02 carats with dimensions of 1.9 x 2.1 x 0.6 mm. Matryoshka’s unique structure can only be seen clearly using X-rays.
Scientists working for Alrosa hypothesize that the inner diamond first came into being and was then surrounded by a larger diamond during its formation. “As far as we know, there has never been a diamond like it in the history of diamond mining globally. This is truly a unique work of nature. Normally, the voids in minerals are often filled. filled with other rocks,” said Oleg Kovalchuk, Alrosa’s representative.
Alrosa is planning to send the Matryoshka diamond to the American Institute of Gemology for further analysis.
