China, with a population of 1.44 billion, is the most populous country in the world, followed by India with 1.38 billion. Together, these two countries account for more than 36% of the total global population. In third place is the US with about 331 million people. Spanning more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia ranks fourth with 273.5 million people. Pakistan ranked 5th with 220.8 million. Vietnam ranks 15th with about 97.3 million people.

The least populous country is Vatican City with only 799 people. Followed by the territory of Tokelau, a cluster of islands between New Zealand and Hawaii with 1,340 people. The world’s low-population countries are all located on small islands, often tropical, and whose economies depend on tourism.

Taken together, the 50 least populous countries account for less than 0.4% of the world’s total population. In contrast, the top 50 accounted for 87% .
