Discovering many new species of flora and fauna in Vietnam

Scientists have discovered a new species of snake-eye butterfly in many places in Vietnam. In addition, a new species of elephant ear was also discovered in the limestone mountains of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces.

Entomologists of the Vietnam Museum of Nature, along with Japanese and Chinese entomologists, have described a new butterfly species to science.

The new species has the scientific name Ypthima dao Monastyrskii & Lang, 2022, named after the wife of Dr. Monastyrskii Alexander, the first author of the paper.

The new species belongs to the butterfly family Giap Nymphalidae, found in northern and central Vietnam and southwestern China.

The snake-eyed butterfly has just been discovered in some areas in Vietnam and southern China.

Specifically, samples were collected in Dong Van district, Ha Giang; Tam Dao National Park, Vinh Phuc Province; Bach Ma National Park, Thua Thien Hue Province; Dak Tram commune, Dak To district, Kon Tum province. Specimens were also obtained in China, near the Vietnamese border.

Scientists from Vietnam Museum of Nature and Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry; Ha Long University, Hanoi National University and Guangxi Botanical Institute, China also recently discovered and described a new species of elephant ear.

The new species is named Oreocharis phuongii , has inflorescence stalks up to 22cm long, bracts 2, yellow flowers with tubular corolla, stamens 4, capsule up to 6cm long.
