The ruins you have just seen are the ancient citadel of Sigirya – also known as the “Lion Stone” – one of the tourist symbols of Sri Lanka.

This ruins is located on a flat rock, 200m high, looks like a kneeling lion from afar. According to historical records, this was the palace of King Kassapa in the period 477 – 495, and was also the capital of this country.

The king chose to build a palace in such a dangerous location because he was the son of a concubine, then killed his father, usurped the throne and exiled Crown Prince Moggallana. After worrying about the return of the exiled Crown Prince, he chose to build a palace on a craggy cliff.

However, 20 years later, Crown Prince Moggollana returned to reclaim the throne, forcing King Kassapa to commit suicide. The new king then moved the capital to Anuradhapura, and the palace of Sigirya was used as a monastery. Over the years, the kingdom declined, the palace became ruins, until the British found it in 1907.
