The adorable pandas, once considered a symbol of China, are now starting a “revolution” in the production of tissues and toilet paper.

Panda Poo paper is made from panda droppings and bamboo leaves. This special material is sourced from pandas living at three facilities under the Panda Conservation and Research Center in Dujiangyan, Ngoai Long and Bifengxia in Sichuan province. Workers will select panda droppings, steam and disinfect them before performing the paper-making process.

This is the joint product of the Panda Conservation and Research Center and the Jianwei Fengsheng Paper Company of Sichuan Province, which specializes in producing about 60,000 tons of paper towels per year.

Panda caretakers often refer to their droppings as “green balls” . Huang Yan, manager at the Panda Conservation and Research Center, said an adult panda eats 12-15kg of bamboo per day and releases about 10kg of “green balls”. Because pandas can’t fully digest this food, their droppings contain a lot of shredded bamboo leaves.

According to Yang Chaolin, president of Jianwei Fengsheng Paper Company, pandas only absorb the sugar in bamboo and release the plant’s fiber, thus saving time and effort in extracting plant fiber to Papermaking.

Every 3-7 days, the company collects panda waste at the center, thereby producing toilet paper, box paper and even pocket tissue.
