Science says: We can completely create diamonds with just… microwaves

These synthetic diamonds are made in about 10 weeks, and they are so real that many experts can’t even tell them apart.

Owning a diamond (even if it is just an artificial diamond) is the desire of many people, but have you ever thought that you can create a diamond?

Science says, you absolutely can do it – create an artificial diamond with a familiar item… a microwave.

This synthetic diamond has the same physical properties and chemical composition as real diamonds.

Unlike cheap rhinestones made from cubic zirconia, these man-made diamonds have the same physical properties and chemical composition as real diamonds.

They are made from a carbon particle placed in a microwave with methane or another carbon-containing gas.

The extreme heat in the chamber creates a spherical plasma light. In this condition, the carbon particles will become diamonds.

The process of creating diamonds in this way can take up to 10 weeks. The artificial diamonds created in this way are so perfect that only machines can distinguish them as man-made.

To date, synthetic diamonds account for a large part of the total global diamond market worth up to 80 billion US dollars.

A report by Bloomberg revealed that in 2014, the production of artificial diamonds produced in the laboratory reached 360,000 carats.

Meanwhile, the output of gems extracted from nature in 2013 amounted to 146 million carats. Artificial diamond production could increase to 2 million carats in 2018 and 20 million carats in 2026.

Gem mining firm De Beers says its research shows that consumers do not equate artificial gems with natural gems.

Moreover, according to them, man-made gemstones can only compete with mere jewelry.

Using an artificial diamond is an eco-friendly option.

It is known that a 1-carat artificial diamond sells for ,000 (equivalent to VND 134 million), the price for a natural diamond of the same size is $ 10,000 (VND 224 million).

Therefore, Vishal Mehta – managing director of IIA (Singapore) said: “We are creating a new industry”.

However, Mr. Mehta did not disclose the cost of producing a diamond in the lab. However, choosing to use an artificial diamond is an environmentally friendly choice.
