Mercury is a bioaccumulative toxicant that can have serious effects on human health.
Mercury exists in many forms, is insoluble in water and can evaporate relatively easily at room temperature, commonly used in thermometers, sphygmomanometers and some other scientific equipment. In nature, mercury is present in some saltwater and freshwater fish, especially large fish at the top of the food chain such as swordfish, sea bass, sharks, etc.
Mercury is very volatile, released into the air can be toxic to people who are exposed, or in the rain seep into soil and water, harming people and living things.
