Why are pirates always blindfolded?

When it comes to “one-eyed”, we often think of pirates. Many people believe that pirates wear one eye to protect their eyes. Or get hurt or blind, so they have to cover it up.

Why are pirates always blindfolded?
Covering one eye helps pirates quickly adapt to the murky conditions inside the ship’s cabin.

The answer, however, is to increase visibility in the dark.

Because from morning to night, pirates need to go back and forth on the deck and in the cabin. The deck is always bright because of the sun, but the cabin is dark. Covering one eye helps pirates quickly adapt to the murky conditions inside the ship’s cabin.

The Discovery Channel’s MythBusters program did a proof-of-concept experiment.

They put a person whose eyes were irritated by external light, then entered a dark room. As a result, it takes 5 minutes for the person to adapt.

But if you let someone else wear a blindfold for 30 minutes, get excited and then enter, the adaptation time will be only 2 minutes.
