This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a chess board that uses magnetic fields to work, but here’s one of the most creative ways to play this mind sport: a spherical chessboard.

A design student named Ben Myers and his father have created a very unique chess board. He shared the process of creating it on Instructables, noting that he measured, cut and assembled only walnut, maple and Jatoba wood, then Ben attached them to 8 circles. Each circle has a large magnet, and once Myers ties them together, he uses a lathe to connect into a sphere.

The magnet allows the user to move the pieces across the sphere, even if it is upside down. Myers told Make Magazine that he was amazed at the new way of playing when the board became spherical: “I initially thought the rook would be very deadly because the board didn’t have vertical moves. But I was very wrong. That’s because statues are far more dangerous. “The curved surface also allows the player to feel the increased difficulty, because they cannot see all the pieces at once.
