The City of the Dead is currently being built just below the Israeli capital Jerusalem and is said to bring the dead back to life.
According to the Daily Mail, this city of the dead is actually a giant catacombs underground . Construction cost is estimated at about 50 million USD, holds about 22,000 corpses and can be expanded.
Sketch the crypt once construction is complete.
To get to the catacombs, people will have to go through an 800 meter long tunnel and an elevator that leads underground. The resting place for the dead in the northwest of Jerusalem is expected to be completed in the next two years, enough to accommodate people in the city for the next 25 years.
The catacombs are known as the city of the dead.
Right above the city of the dead is the Har HaMenuchot cemetery, Israel’s largest cemetery with over 150,000 people buried here.
Arik Glazer, the project’s owner said: “We came up with this idea to provide a different way of burial, very safe and discreet. There’s not enough space on the ground, so building underground is the most likely option.”
The project will be completed within the next 2 years.
A large amount of money invested in the project comes from booking in advance, most of which are Jews living abroad. Future Israeli citizens are buried here free of charge.
Many Jews believe that being buried in this huge cemetery will bring them back to life as soon as possible.
The project brings people living in Jerusalem back to the traditional way of burial.
“Everybody agrees with this project,” said the investor. It is similar to the common burial practice centuries ago.
“This way of burial existed 1,600-2,000 years ago. We’re just restoring the tradition because there’s not much room left for the dead on the ground.”
The cost of building a giant underground catacomb is up to 50 million USD.
In a city known for its rich heritage, Mr. Glazer said construction crews took great care not to encroach on the ruins or ancient tombs.
“This is probably the first city of the dead in the world, at least in modern times,” Glazer said.
