Fate brought Robert Lincoln and Edwin Booth to meet at a train station in Jersey City, New Jersey in the midst of the American Civil War. Robert was on vacation at Harvard, traveling from New York to Washington DC, and Booth was traveling to Richmond, Virginia to visit his friend John T. Ford (owner of the Ford Theater in Washington). According to Robert, the date of this meeting of the two was around 1863 – 1864.
The incident happened when a group of passengers were buying tickets to board the train lying from the ticket seller at the door of the carriage. The platform platform is as high as the carriage platform and there is a narrow gap between the carriage and the platform. Robert was pushed close to the carriage by the crowd while waiting for his turn. At that point, the train started to move and he was dragged down the gap below. Fortunately, a stranger was able to pull him in time to the safe area of the platform. When he turned to thank the person who saved his life, Robert realized it was Edwin Booth, the famous character everyone knew.
