The vegetation around the crater was dying, and the smell of the gas forced locals to temporarily stay away from the area.

Many Mexican locals believe that the newly appeared crater is a supernatural portal to “hell”.

A resident named Carlos said: “The smell of gas covered the area. We don’t know if this unusual phenomenon is dangerous.”

The crater emits a strange gas like gas or sulfur.

“We also noticed that there was a smell of sulfur, except that, just getting close to it made the eyes sting,” Carlos shared.

Experts in yellow protective suits are now on hand to dig and use scientific tools to examine the crater.

Local official Dominga Castillo Lopez said what caused the crater to appear is still a mystery. “Neighbors told me the area was becoming uninhabitable, the smoke coming from gas and sulfur.”

Some residents believe that the crack appeared due to an underground explosion to open the way for oil extraction.

Mexican expert Javier Collado said his agency is still waiting for the results of the site inspection. However, the initial report stated that “no hazardous materials were detected and the emissions were not methane”.

“We did not detect a risk of an explosion. We do not warn people to evacuate because there is no real danger,” Collado said.
