Discovered "big" diamond intact for 2 billion years in Russia

The 190.77-carat diamond was found in the Siberian Republic of Yakutia, Russia, just days before the new year 2020.

According to RT, the high-quality gem was discovered at the Botuobinskaya mine on December 25, according to the world’s leading diamond producer Alrosa.

The diamond is thought to have been lying dormant in the mine since 2 billion years ago.

Initial analysis shows that the gem appears to have been lying dormant in the mine since 2 billion years ago. Manufacturer Alrosa needs more time to give accurate information about the age of the “big” diamond.

The discovery of the diamond just before the New Year is a real gift, said Alrosa deputy chief executive Evgeny Agureev. He added that nature has been generous this year, with the heart-shaped diamond being found just before Valentine’s Day 2019.

The large diamond is currently being brought to the Alrosa center for further analysis and valuation.

Earlier this year, the leading diamond mining company in Russia, Alrosa and also one of the largest diamond miners in the world, also discovered “matryoshka diamond” with an odd shape.

The diamond moves freely inside a larger gem, like the famous Russian Matryoshka doll. This is considered the first such diamond in the history of the global diamond mining industry.
